MID is a trailblazing, internationally acclaimed, professional dance company, as well as accredited training organisation which has produced a multitude of award-winning and productive dancers, choreographers, arts administrators and teachers throughout South Africa and internationally. Since its inception, MID has had a major impact on socio-cultural transformation as well as the economic empowerment of South African youth.<\/p>\n
We continue to hold fast to the original ethos of Founder, Sylvia \u2018Magogo\u2019 Glasser who was knighted for her tireless work in the arts, by King Willem-Alexander of Holland. Dame Sylvia started her life\u2019s work training youth from disadvantaged communities and equipping them with skills which could be used to overcome their socio-economic circumstances. Having begun in 1978 at the height of apartheid, as one of few mixed-race dance groups, by Dame Sylvia in her garage, Moving into Dance has developed into one of South Africa\u2019s premier professional, full-time, Contemporary African dance company and has performed to enthusiastic audiences throughout Africa, Malaysia, Europe, South America, the USA and Canada.<\/p>\n
Impacting change since 1978 and continuing to do so is a huge feat in an industry that is under-resourced, under-funded and whose impact is constantly bombarded by questions of economic viability.<\/p>\n
As well as the full-time professional dance company, MID has a full-time one-year fully accredited Performing Arts Training Course, a Trainee\/Apprentice Programme, an extensive Outreach Programme that extends into under-resourced areas throughout South Africa, and recreational dance classes for the general public.<\/p>\n
MID\u2019s motto \u2018Nyakaze o Fetohe \u2013 Making a Difference Through Dance\u2019 \u2013 embodies its underlying philosophy and practice of transforming lives, one student, one dancer, one family, and one community at a time.<\/p>\n
