A Forthnight of Conversation – 31 July – 11 August 2017
Conservator, Ekkehard Hans, will restore castings of ancient Greek sculptures, donated to the University of Johannesburg by the Greek community in the 1970’s. Members of the public, school groups and interested individuals are invited to watch the master at work and interact with him at the UJ Art Gallery from 31 July to 11 August 2017, weekdays between 10 00 and 14 00.
LECTURE: Wednesday 2 August 2017 – 14 00
Ekkehard Hans will present a lecture on the processes involved in the restoration of artworks in different media and Rika Nortjé will address preventative conservation and basic house-keeping in the museum environment. This includes basic cleaning and handling of artworks, being mindful of the materials used in the art making process and aspects to consider when artworks are to be installed and travelling.
Hans is a respected conservator of artworks held in South African university, government, museum and private collections. He is experienced in restoration of paintings on canvas and wooden polychrome objects from ancient Egypt, as well as from the late medieval, baroque and contemporary periods. He completed six years of study at the University of Applied Science and Arts in Hildesheim and Cologne, Germany and did practical work at the British Museum, the National Gallery in Stockholm, the Hamburg Kunsthalle and in Bavaria, where he specialized in conservation of late medieval and baroque church interiors, paintings and sculptures. He relocated to South Africa in 2006 where he continues to practice his craft.
Rika Nortjé (neè Stockenström) is a ceramics restoration practitioner, freelance art collections manager and curator. She taught for two years at the Kimberley Art Centre before her appointment as art project leader at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley; a position she held for twelve years before relocating to Johannesburg. She holds a B.Tech degree in Ceramic Design and a Master of Arts degree (Art History).
PPC Concert Art Workshop:: 16 and 17 August 2017
Concrete is often overlooked in terms of its potential as a material of artistic expression. Presentations and demonstrations by Daniel van der Merwe, Architect: PPC Innovation, who initiated the PPC Imaginarium Awards four years ago, will provide insight into the different techniques available for creative expression, the basics of concrete mould making, mixing and casting techniques. The hands-on workshops will allow participants to mould and cast their own pieces.
